Flying 4 Awareness

Flying 4 Awareness has been formed by Sonia Bortolin, Becky Ritter and Tamra Sheffman, three women pilots, who learned to fly later in life. They met because of flying and became good friends. When Sonia was struck with breast cancer that was not discovered until the beginnings of stage 4, they were all devastated. Tamra and Becky have watched Sonia fight for her life through chemo, radiation, many surgeries and reconstruction. After 2 + years of treatment, Sonia is now in remission and has been able to get her FAA medical back, which means that she is now able to fly again. We are so happy with her new lease on life!
Thinking about the long list of friends and relatives struck by various forms of cancer made us want to do something to educate, help in the fight. To this end, the three friends have formed a charitable corporation, appropriately named “Flying 4 Awareness”, and are working to raise funds to educate, help promote awareness and fight for a cure through aviation events. A side benefit is the promotion of general aviation to men, women and young adults.
Our mission is to raise resources for education regarding diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other debilitating diseases through the strength of women aviators, and various aviation events.
We seek to actively promote awareness and education in order to improve the health and well being of cancer patients, their families and the general public
2010 events include:
· May 13, 2010: Sunset Benefit Miami Beach, FL. Proceeds support Team Fly 4 Awareness and breast cancer.
· June 6, 2010: Miami Beach, Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society.
· June 22, 2010 – June 25 2010: Air Race Classic 2010 - an all-female transcontinental 2500 mile race, which we have entered as Team Fly 4 Awareness, with proceeds benefiting breast cancer awareness.
